Respiratory Problems Linked To Soda Intake Between 2008 and 2010, around 16,000 people, over the age of 16 (average age 46.7), were examined in terms of their soda consumption, using the South Australian Monitoring and Surveillance System. The researchers state that 1 in every 10 people drink at least half a litre of carbonated beverages per day. The authors found a 12.5% higher chance for soda drinkers to develop asthma, and a 4.4% higher chance of soda drinkers developing COPD. However, the study could not confirm whether this had anything to do with a regular unhealthy diet altogether, not just in terms of soda. Medical News Today. American Academy Of Neurology (AAN ) New research shows how people could potentially stop their brains from shrinking and keep them sharp by adjusting their diet. Those with diets high in omega 3 fatty acids and in vitamins C, D, E and the B vitamins also had higher scores on mental thinking tests than people with diets low in those nutrients. These omega 3 fatty acids and vitamin D are primarily found in fish. The B vitamins and antioxidants C and E are primarily found in fruits and vegetables. In another finding, the study showed that people with diets high in trans fats were more likely to have brain shrinkage and lower scores on the thinking and memory tests than people with diets low in trans fats. The People of the Book: Philosemitism in England, From Cromwell to Churchill, Gertrude Himmelfarb, published November 2011. The history of Judaism has for too long been dominated by the theme of anti semitism, reducing Judaism to the recurrent saga of persecution and the struggle for survival. The history of philosemitism provides a corrective to that abysmal view, a reminder of the venerable religion and people that have been an inspiration for non-Jews as well as Jews. There is a poetic justice – or historic justice – in the fact that England, the first country to expel the Jews in medieval times, has produced the richest literature of philosemitism in modern times. A recent history of antisemitism in England regretfully observes that English philosemitism is "a past glory." This book may recall England – and not only England – to that past glory and inspire other countries to emulate it. It may also reaffirm Jews in their own faith and aspirations. Gertrude Himmelfarb, professor emeritus at the Graduate School of the City University, has written extensively on intellectual and cultural history with a focus on Victorian England. Her most recent books are The Jewish Odyssey of George Eliot, The Moral Imagination: From Edmund Burke to Lionel Trilling, and The Roads to Modernity: The British, French, and American Enlightenments.
